Cao Dewang, Chairman of Fuyao Glass Industry Group.
Dewang was named the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year 2009 at an awards ceremony held in Monte Carlo. The largest award of its kind, he beat out 43 other rivals each of whom were champions in their native countries.
Founded in 1987 in Fuzhou, Fuyao Glass is China’s leading automotive glass manufacturer, with more than half of the overall domestic market. The company is also an OEM for automakers based around the globe, including Audi, Hyundai, Volvo and Ford. In presenting the award, an independent jury said that Dewang’s entrepreneurship skills were evident throughout the Chinese auto industry and that he had given it a boost, both domestically and overseas.
Past winners include such international business notables as Wayne Huizenga of Blockbuster Video fame (U.S.), Guy Laliberte the founder of Cirque Du Soleil (Canada), and Dr Jean-Paul Clozel of Actelion Pharmaceuticals (Switzerland).
