PERIODS of high unemployment tend to be particularly hard on teenagers, who wind up competing for jobs with more experienced, laid-off adults.

When Faith Borden, 16, of Metuchen, N.J., applied for a job in March to be a counselor at a summer day camp, she looked around and saw “all these 30- and 40-year-olds,” she said. “Usually it’s just teenagers.”

Also facing a competitive job market, Max O’Dell, 14, of Cary, N.C., started Smiley Inc., a custom T-shirt design business. He paints shirts in his driveway and hangs them in the garage to dry; revenue so far has been $170.

Unemployment for 16- to 19-year-olds is at its highest rate since 1992 — at 22.7 percent in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is causing some teenagers to rethink their notion of work and to embrace entrepreneurship.

“This is a generation raised to believe they can do anything, and the first to grow up with entrepreneurial celebrities like Steve Jobs of Apple and Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google,” said Donna Fenn, who interviewed 150 young entrepreneurs for her forthcoming book, “Upstarts: How Gen Y Entrepreneurs Are Rocking the World of Business and 8 Ways You Can Profit From Their Success.”

The Internet may be the most significant catalyst for teenagers’ entrepreneurship. The ability to start a business online has lowered many barriers to self-employment faced by young people — you need only a domain name and a Web site to set up shop and are largely anonymous to customers, who never have to know your age, said Alan Lysaght, co-author of “The ABCs of Making Money for Teens.”

There is also an abundance of information online about starting a business.

Laura Durst, 18, a recent high school graduate in Woodstock, Conn., in the state’s northeast corner, said that there were so few jobs for teenagers there that two years ago she began setting up a Web-based business, <a href="http://workinmyroom.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">WorkInMyRoom.com. It provides teenagers with information and online resources to find jobs that can be done from home.

Ms. Durst said she was inspired by her mother, who also is an entrepreneur. “Seeing her work from home, where she could be her own boss, I liked the idea of that,” she said.

Ms. Durst’s revenue comes from advertising. She uses Google Ad Sense — which displays relevant Google ads on her site — and earns money when users click on them. She says she is making about $250 a month.

In an unusual twist, many moms are finding themselves in a new scenario: seeking work-at-home arrangements driven not by flexibility – think soccer practices and piano recitals – but as the best option to supplement family income.

with four unemployed workers for every job opening, moms like Kim Perez of Pembroke Pines are moving into action. A few months ago, recession reality forced Perez, mother of a toddler, to look for new money-making possibilities when her hours as a retail sales associate were cut in half. Her husband, a builder, has been out of work for almost a year.

Perez considers herself in transition. She has set up a makeshift office in her bedroom and sells glass jewelry. “I’m hoping I can turn this into a full-time arrangement and make good money.”

The numbers are jarring: 800,000 women have lost full-time positions in the past 12 months, and those on payrolls part time grew by nearly 900,000. For the women who work part time, first-quarter median earnings were $269 a week. But men are increasingly seeing their schedules reduced, too. As of March, the number of men working part-time positions increased 14 percent from a year earlier.

Two metro Atlanta moms have figured out how to turn cranky babies into a thriving business.

Laura Hunter and Jennifer Walker never thought of themselves as entrepreneurs until about five years ago, after a little advice from country crooner Kenny Rogers. Today they are published authors, Web site operators and sought-after consultants in a big niche market.

The two moms – they have eight kids between them – run <a href="http://www.momsoncall.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Moms on Call LLC, which offers real-world advice and counseling to newly minted parents.

Their consultation business has exploded – it grew 600 percent in three years. Their book, “Guide to Basic Baby Care,” has sold more than 20,000 copies and been translated into three languages. They recently started online courses in child care on their Web site that take parents from infancy through age 5.

Walker and Hunter believe a good part of their success is due to the fact that modern moms often live hundreds of miles from their natural support network – the mothers, sisters and aunts in traditional extended families who aided in child care.

The two pediatric nurses admit that a lot of people have stepped up to help make their business a success. One of the first was singer Rogers.

About five years ago, he called Hunter to consult with him and his wife, Wanda. The couple had twins when Rogers was 65. At the time, Hunter was doing consultations using a few photocopied sheets of instructions.

“I was getting ready to leave, and Kenny was flipping through [my] folder and he said: ‘It’s not copyrighted.’ He said: ‘You’ve got something here. You have to copyright this.’ His attorney … called the next morning.”

Getting children to sleep through the night is the most common question they get. Sometimes, the calls and e-mails are just strange.

“I had one e-mail that just said ‘hit on head by chicken,’ ” Hunter said. “I called and the kid was screaming and the dad was panicked. He was standing by the freezer and dropped a frozen chicken on his child. It all turned out fine, but that was what was worrying that dad at that moment.”

Moms on Call LLC
An in-home consultation is $300 for two hours. Includes a book, DVD, swaddling blanket and six months of follow-up assistance. Phone version is $250. Online courses are $29.95 each. Their book can be ordered online for less than $20. On the web: <a href="http://www.momsoncall.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">www.momsoncall.com

Many college students think about what they’d like to do for work after graduation. But one young Vermont man has already launched a successful career that is keeping him and his parents, quite busy.

Michael Adams\Eddie’s Energy Bars “I started the business because I hate being bored. I need to do something every minute of every day.”

Adams launched ‘<a href="http://www.eddiesenergy.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Eddie’s Energy Bars‘ three years ago, inspired by an entrepreneurship class he took in high school. He liked baking, and business and wanted to make a little extra cash.\

Michael: “Multiple bars have shelf-lives of 6 months to a year. That’s not real food- why would you want to eat something that’s a year old?”

With the help of his parents, Adams baked and sold the energy bars locally. When he was away at college, he worked on marketing, while Jeanne and ‘Ed’ – the company’s namesake – took over many of the cooking duties.

Ed “We have a hard time finding a place to sit and eat now.” At a point now where they have to turn down some customers.

Michael “They can’t quite grasp that we make our bars in a 200 square foot kitchen- with one oven and one mixer. I don’t think any of us thought it’d get this big.”

Despite the company’s success so far, Adams says one of his biggest challenges – outside of juggling college and his company – is selling consumers on his product. These bars are fresh– which is normally a selling point, but not necessarily when it comes to energy bars.

Michael “People are used to taking an energy bar and throwing it in the glove compartment, and when they run off the road in a blizzard they can eat it. That’s not true with our bars- unless the blizzard is in the next 2 weeks.”

No blizzards in the immediate forecast, but the Adams have had to weather a flood of orders recently. And somehow Michael still managed to pull in a 4.0 G.P.A. last semester- while managing the business from afar.

After next year, that will no longer be an issue. Though Michael hasn’t decided if he’ll continue to grow the company after graduation. He’ll have to see if he has the energy.

Citing health concerns, Jackson plans to let assistant coach Kurt Rambis man the sidelines for road games , while Jackson oversees the action from either his home office or via a wi-fi connection at his neighborhood Starbucks.

“The technology’s there, we’ve got a veteran ball club, I think it can work,” said Jackson, via his newly installed webcam. “We had a couple of IT guys in to lay down the network and hook me up with a super-fast connection. I’ll get video streams from the sidelines and I’ve got a guy coming in tomorrow to show me how to diagram plays remotely using this cool new whiteboard technology. The guys don’t need me to be there to hold their hands — and frankly there are stretches during games when there are about a million more productive things I can be doing with my time. Now, instead of sitting there like an idiot, I can hit the proverbial pause button, walk to the refrig, catch up on some reading, or just stare off into space. By the time the fourth quarter rolls around I’m fresh, alert and engaged. Wish I thought of this sooner.”

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) June 18, 2009 — While companies are laying off thousands of people each month, the unemployed are making the transition to a profitable online home based business. As a result, site builder software is selling like hot cakes, and one that is quickly becoming popular is Phoenix Site Rebuilder.

“It seems like corporate America is in total meltdown. Just about everyone I know has lost their job,” says Kathy Culek, a former accountant of a fortune 500 company and a satisfied Phoenix Site Rebuilder customer. “Six months ago I lost my job and then my husband lost his job the following month. We were so scared. We were living paycheck to paycheck and we thought it was the end.”

“We searched the Internet for site builder software and how to start an online home based business. Luckily, we found Phoenix Site Rebuilder,” continues Culek. “It only took us a couple of hours to set up our first site, then we quickly built several more sites. About a month later, we started making good money with our online home based business. Now we have dozens of sites built with the site builder software and we make over $2,700.00 a month and our income is steadily rising.”

“Starting a successful online home based business will soon become common place,” said Rob Blacksilver, the President of Codex Software. “People that have lost their jobs are now making a good living with an online home based business. In some cases, they are making more money than they did with their old crummy jobs, especially if they purchased high quality site builder software, such as Phoenix Site Rebuilder.”

Rob Blacksilver is the inventor of the <a href="http://www.siterebuilder.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Site Rebuilder, which is a combination between site builder software and a content management system. A Site Rebuilder converts dynamic content into static content and it utilizes a unique asset-based architecture to graphically render the structure of a web page.

About Codex Software.
Founded in 2007, Codex Software was started by Rob Blacksilver, whose vision of creating revolutionary site builder software for the online home based business crowd continues to define the company. The result of that vision is Phoenix Site Rebuilder, which is the company’s flagship product. Phoenix Site Rebuilder is high quality site builder software designed around drag and drop mechanics that is easy to use. Quickly build money making web pages that include Google AdSense, Amazon ads, ClickBank ads, PPC ads, data feeds, and more.

In the U.S., there are 75 million mothers, all of whom influence 85 percent of their household purchases. That’s about $2.1 trillion per year in spending, according to the <a href="http://top-business-opportunities.net/2007/08/marketing-to-moms/"title="Marketing to Moms" >Marketing to Moms Coalition. So what are they buying from you?

If your target market comprises this vast group of women with children under 18 at home, then the newest information and trends on their shopping and purchasing decisions are critical to your success. Nielsen’s Moms Annual Media Survey shows that these busy, time-strapped consumers use TV and e-mail the most on a day-to-day basis, followed closely by websites. And when these moms are online, the M2Moms Coalition survey confirms, their most frequent activities include paying bills, reading the news, researching products and shopping.

The key to <a href="http://top-business-opportunities.net/2007/08/marketing-to-moms/"title="marketing to moms" >marketing to moms is providing the right message, and employing tactics that factor in the economy and their shopping characteristics. Here are five smart ways to do this:

Help moms find you.

Provide deeper content.

Get active in social media.

Enlist influential ambassadors.

Make buying fun.

Experts warn many work at home jobs are scams, but some are legit and could work for you in a down economy.

“I love working at home,” said Treena Scism who works from home for VIPDesk.com

Scism works as a virtual concierge of sorts. She makes dinner reservations and books travel packages for her clients. However, unlike the concierge you might find at a hotel, Scism does her job from the comfort of home.

“Its excellent to be able to be there in my comfort zone, in my home office with my own computer, I know how it works,” said Scism.

VIPDesk.com routes calls to employees like Scism who can do everything from finding the nearest Starbucks for someone to tracking down a phone number for an old high school classmate.

Arise Virtual Solutions serves as a virtual contact center, handling incoming calls and online customer service for such clients as AAA, Home Depot and Carnival Cruise Lines.

“I’m actually ahead,” claims LaFlesch. “When you factor in what I’m not paying for: gas, food, trips to the vending machine, all those things add up. I’ve got more money in my pocket now than I did before.”

Jackie Mygrant works as a scheduling manager for KSS International, coordinating mystery shoppers around the world.

“I like being able to work from home,” said Mygrant. “I have a lot of flexibility as to when I work. I work 60 hours but I get to choose what 60.”

KSS international hires so-called mystery shoppers, people who go in to business like Circle K or Dunkin Donuts and report back to them about everything from the quality of their products to the cleanliness of their stores.

“We wear pajamas, loungewear, I work in my sweats,” admitted Mygrant. “(I) don’t have to put on make-up. I don’t have any dry cleaning bills, automotive expenses.”

The business of stock photography has grown significantly on the Web, which in turn has allowed photography enthusiasts to find a marketplace for their images.

If you have good images, you can easily earn anywhere from $300 to $1,000 a month. Here are some places where you can sell your photos and earn money from them:

<a href="http://shutterstock.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Shutterstock = one of the most, if not the most popular micro stock photography sites on the Web today. Some photographers earn about $600 a month from this site alone. The site pays you $0.25 per download of your images, as well as referrals both in terms of other photographers and photo buyers.

<a href="http://www.alamy.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alamy = as a contributor, you get 65% of the sale of your photos while you retain copyright and editorial control over your images.

<a href="https://www.photoshelter.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Photoshelter = this site has over 25,000 buyers including magazines, advertising agencies and other high profile types of organizations. They will host your images, the number of which will depend on your subscription plan which ranges from free to $49.99 per month, and they take 10% of every sale you make.

<a href="http://www.stockxpert.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">StockXpert = offers you 50% for each download of your photographs, but they screen the images first to ensure the quality of the photographs offered in the site

<a href="http://www.fotolia.co.uk"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fotolia = a UK website, this site provides commission to photographers of up to 80% though the average is about 52% of the total sale price. You can choose to sell your images on an exclusive or non exclusive basis.

<a href="http://www.istockphoto.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">iStockPhoto = royalty structure is 20% if non-exclusive and 40% if exclusive.

Other sites that you need to check include:

Donna Gonzalez recently posted her resume on websites like Career Builder.Com and quickly got a reply, “They just need people who already had bank accounts set up, so we could cash the checks for them.”

According to Donna, a company called Global Healthcare Inc.,out of London, sent her a contract asking her to cash checks and wire them the money. It was supposedly quicker than doing it overseas. Donna was promised 10-percent of the money cashed, “It looked legitimate I mean I went to paralegal school and I knew some contractual law and so the contract looked legitimate, but it wasn’t evidentially.”

After Donna cashed a check from a “so called” customer and wired the company more than 25-hundred dollars, she later found out the check was fake and she was the one who was stuck paying, “I was so devastated I cried so hard.”

Sgt. Kevin Smith of the St. Petersburg Police Department says, he gets calls like this one at least two times a week, “It’s heartbreaking because you really hate to see people out there trying to work, trying to sell something to be taken advantage of.”

Sgt. Kevin Smith says websites like Career Builder.Com are safe, but people need to be more aware of who they’re dealing with, “Unfortunately anybody has a right to log in and look at those resumes so you really don’t know who’s actually offering you a job.”

He says thieves are also targeting victims through the mail and even fax machines. . Sgt. Smith says it’s difficult to catch the thieves because of trying to coordinate with other countries.
I posed that question to the grown-ups I encountered recently while exploring <a href="http://www.whateverlife.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Whateverlife.com. The teen-girl site and company was started by Ashley Qualls, an entrepreneur from a working-class neighborhood outside Detroit, who happens to be 17 herself. At that age, LeeAnn Prescott, the research director at <a href="http://hitwise.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Hitwise, was working at an amusement park, fashioning faux Civil War shots of people. Robb Lippitt, the former COO of <a href="http://www.eprize.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">ePrize who consults for Qualls, had worked his way up from dishwasher to prep cook to manager of Buddy’s BBQ. Ceca Mijatovic, the founder of the girls portal <a href="http://dayzloop.com/cs/default.aspx"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">dayZloop, didn’t have a job yet; she was a foreign-exchange student from Yugoslavia. Me? I was delivering pizza for Domino’s.

“Of course, this,” says Ian Moray of ValueClick Media, referring to Whateverlife, “is something we all wish we’d done when we were 17.”

If only the Internet had been around then. One of the many fascinating things about Whateverlife is that Ashley didn’t set out to start a business. The Internet practically did it for her. Web design was a hobby, something she’d been learning online since she was 9. As a high-school sophomore, she figured out how to create layouts for MySpace pages, and her friends at Lincoln Park High School were keen to customize theirs, much like school lockers. As word spread throughout the MySpace universe, the 15-year-old couldn’t afford the servers to support her exploding online audience. A friend suggested using Google AdSense, which generates ad revenue based on a site’s traffic. Ka-ching. Whateverlife was off and running. Ashley has created nearly 3,000 layouts, her monthly audience is around 7 million, and revenue has grown from a couple of thousand bucks a month to as much as $70,000 – more than $1 million in less than two years.

You hear a lot about companies routing their customer-service calls to workers overseas, but a less-noticed trend is the growth in home-based call-center workers. The number of such workers in North America has tripled since 2000, according to an estimate by research firm Yankee Group, with more than 670,000 phone agents in the United States and Canada now working at home.

Thanks to the Internet and better call-routing technology, more companies are finding they can outsource their order-taking, sales and problem-solving calls to home-based workers, said LiveOps Chairman Bill Trenchard. LiveOps not only runs an outsource operation, Trenchard said, but it provides technology for companies that want to set up their own home-based call centers.

Home-based workers tend to be better educated and more loyal than their counterparts at traditional call centers, Trenchard said. Most of LiveOps’ workers have college degrees — Opara has a master’s — and turnover is low.

Call centers usually have no tolerance for audible distractions, so a crying baby, barking dog or ringing doorbell could get you fired. (Some companies require their workers have dedicated offices with doors to minimize potential distractions.) An operator also needs a dedicated phone line, a computer and high-speed Internet access.

Some call centers that say they are currently hiring include:

Just over a year ago, we covered <a href="http://www.springwise.com/financial_services/ether_sell_what_you_say/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Ether, which makes it easy for (budding) entrepreneurs to sell spoken advice and support by providing them with a dedicated 1-888 number for customers to call, and taking care of billing and payments. Now, a massive player has joined the arena. Skype’s latest software release includes a beta version of <a href="http://www.skype.com/products/skypeprime/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Skype Prime. The service is very similar to Ether: sellers set a price, fixed or per minute, find buyers for their service, and Skype handles the rest. Of course, instead of using phone lines, both sellers and buyers use Skype’s voice over IP platform.

While Skype charges ‘call providers’ more than Ether does—30% commission versus 15%—Skype’s obvious benefit is its existing global user base. Skype has over 171 million registered users, is available in 28 languages and is used in almost every country around the world. Which means a very large reach for minipreneurs who’d like to sell their services, whether they’re offering Spanish lessons, tax advice or something saucier. (Note that Skype’s guidelines state that call providers cannot offer any content or service that is adult, sexual, pornographic or paedophiliac.)

Other alternatives include <a href="http://www.bitwine.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">BitWine and <a href="http://www.wengo.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Wengo.

Wendy Newmeyer started her foray into the balsam business by selling the cut branches of the balsam fir trees for a local incense factory.

Quite coincidentally, she had read in a book that Native Americans used balsam trees as herb for many different home remedies. With her long-standing interests in herbs “that got me excited into thinking about balsams in a different way,” said Wendy. She became a supplier to the incense factory, which used her balsam fir boughs to stuff souvenir pillows.

Through the years Wendy has experimented with trade shows, catalogue sales, the QVC home shopping network, and many other avenues to showcase her products.

She recently set-up a <a href="http://mainebalsam.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">web site, to widen her market reach and take a dip on Internet retailing. Her worldwide outlets now exceed 4,400 stores and her employees have increased to 12. Sales of Maine Balsam Fir Products have reached well over $500,000 per year.

A bold claim, perhaps. But new technology and opportunities make it easier than ever to start a lucrative business at home.

Gone are the days when a fledgling business required a large investment of start-up capital. With a phone, a computer, and a great idea, it’s possible to join the legion of people who have started businesses from home.

Home-based businesses now comprise almost half of the estimated 26 million small businesses nationwide, according to an analysis of Census Bureau data. New technologies have made it possible for a solo entrepreneur to begin a business that once would have required the resources of a much larger organization. Thanks to new tools, the range of home-based industries stretches far beyond consulting or even eBay businesses.

Many solo entrepreneurs are finding success with service businesses, particularly those that cater to specific demographics, such as overworked professionals, children, or the elderly.

“Service businesses can be more fluid and flexible than retail businesses because they do not have the challenge of sustaining inventory,” says Terri Lonier, author of Working Solo and founder of workingsolo.com. “Because they are not tied down with manufacturing or inventory costs, service businesses can be more responsive to the market.”

Low-cost, Internet-based tools are currently driving the home-based business boom, says Bruce Judson, senior faculty fellow at Yale School of Management and author of Go It Alone: The Secret to Building a Successful Business on Your Own. “It is literally now possible for an independent businessperson to rent, for $20 a month, software capabilities that were only available to Fortune 500 companies a few years ago.”

Solo entrepreneurs can now create databases, manage e-mail lists, or do sequenced mailings at reasonable costs. Communication technologies, like VoIP phone service and online conferencing make it easy to create a home-based office with full-service functionality.

Such technologies are also making it possible for entrepreneurs to do business anywhere — even remote, rural locations. In one example, a recent study found that eight of the top 10 most active eBay communities for buying and selling were small towns, not major cities.

Russell Hirst was just 21-years-old when he set up his online flower delivery service from a bedroom at his parents’ home in Manchester, England. Hirst’s ‘one room, one computer’ company is now selling flowers to 120 countries.

Hirst says he is self-taught when it comes to the internet and attributes his success with <a href="http://www.valueflora.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Valueflora to noticing a gap in the market. By putting customers in touch with the farms that grew the flowers, he could cut out the middle man.

Customers choose their flowers from the website, their order is sent directly to the flower farms, where they are packaged and sent. There are no call centres – everything is done online, and Valueflora has just six members of staff.

Amazingly, Hirst claims his global enterprise cost under £10 to start. “It was done on a shoestring,” says Hirst. “I paid £8 for the domain name and it was pretty much just me for the first 18 months, cold calling people and getting in touch with the farmers.”

Hirst is planning to branch out into providing flowers for events, and remains keen to extend the Value brand further. With a current annual growth rate of 700% and a 2006 turnover of £1.2m

Once you’ve decided to take the plunge and move your home-based business to a commercial office space, there are a number of decisions you’ll have to make. First, where will you go and what facilities will you need?

Taking an office close to your home and your employees’ homes is always a good bet, as it will cut down both on gas costs and on driving time. An office outside the home should provide a comfortable space—such as a conference room—where you can meet with customers and employees, particularly if one of your motivations for leaving home is to impress clients and appear more professional.

So be cautious about the length of the lease you sign, Lasher advises, no matter how good a deal a landlord offers you on a long-term lease. “Try to negotiate a one-year lease with a one- or two-year option if you have any reservations about your move or whether the space will meet your future needs.

Jeffrey Landers, a serial entrepreneur and the owner of <a href="http://www.offices2share.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">Offices2share.com, agrees. “The most common and often the most fatal mistake made by fledgling businesses is signing a multiyear lease which can require a financial obligation that may outlive the business itself,” he says.

Once you’ve settled on a location, draw up a list of costs to include in your budget. You should include one-time costs associated with the move and the purchase of new furniture and equipment, as well as ongoing fixed costs, such as rent, insurance, and utilities. Will the building provide adequate parking for you and your employees? Make sure you include parking costs in your budget.

There are many ways to break into the videogame industry, according to experts. These job types offer the fastest path into sought-after studios like Electronic Arts, THQ and Ubisoft.

Paying your rent playing videogames sounds fun, but the reality can be far more tedious, says Kaos studios associate producer Dennis Allard Crow. When he started his career as a game tester, he played the game Tony Hawk’s Underground for days at a stretch, searching for errors. It might sound mind-numbingly monotonous, but the job is one of the few left in the industry for inexperienced youngsters. The problem: The secret is out, and studios are inundated with applications. Crow says that for every tester at his studio, they have 10 applicants. To get your resume noticed, write summaries of 10 games you played, detailing what you liked about the game and what you didn’t. “Demonstrate a love for videogames,” says Crow.

A layer of ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies. A good idea, huh?

Richard LaMotta thought so, and in the 25 years since he invented the Chipwich, a billion have sold.

The Chipwich didn’t become a sensation because of TV ads or marketing, but because LaMotta used an army of college students to hawk it on pushcarts on street corners – going directly to the consumer.

Now LaMotta, a resident of Mount Kisco, is promoting another new idea that again bypasses grocery stores and other traditional venues.

His new venture is called <a href="http://www.mystudentbiz.net"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">myStudentBiz. And, once again, students are the centerpiece of his marketing plan.

LaMotta intends to recruit high school and college students from around the country to distribute novelty snacks in neighborhood businesses, such as Laundromats, dry cleaners, car washes and bridal shops.

The students make $5 for every box they sell. The retailer gets a 45 percent profit, and LaMotta gets a way to put new products into the public eye without spending a penny on advertising.

The students can also win a $10,000 bounty if they discover a food item that <a href="http://www.mystudentbiz.net"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" target="_blank">myStudentBiz can market.

LaMotta said he has personally invested $3 million in myStudentbiz.

LaMotta, who is 54, said that when he was a young man, he spent 15 years attending college at night. He wants to help today’s students make some money to avoid his experience.

“It harkens back to my own childhood. A lot of this comes from being a poor kid growing up in Brooklyn,” he said. “I want every kid who is interested in this to have an opportunity.”

Homestead Technologies commissioned a study on home-based businesses and found the following as their list of “hot” opportunities that can be run from home:

E-Learning: With advances in new web application tools such as podcasts and video blogs, development costs will decrease.

E-Bay Aftermarket: Helping companies conduct market research, pricing strategies, shipping, and competitive analysis is a great niche business.

Children Arts Education: There is a major market for teachers of right-brained education who are thought to help foster the development of future innovators.

Garage Organizers: Just as organizing closets was the next big thing in the 80’s, the messy garage is the final space to clean up.

Background Checks: Small businesses with limited resources are turning to background check companies to handle investigation and due diligence.

Pet Sitting: An ideal home-based business where you get paid to walk and enjoy the companionship of pets.

Specialized Coaching: The coaching market has boomed in the recent years including specialized areas such as life, spiritual, corporate, relationship and business.

Home-based Debt Collection: Debt has become a way of life for many Americans. Operating a low overhead home-based collection service can serve the niche sections of this market.

Specialized Outsourcing: The small business market has limited resources and a focus on core competencies. Specialized outsourcing from home to small business will have a solid position market position for years to come.

Scrap Booking: In today’s easy to save and store digital age, opportunities abound for the home-based scrapbook artist, workshop teacher, or a direct sales rep.

Will you get rich with any of these ideas? Probably not. But, that is not the point for most who choose to run a home-based business. It is to earn income while enjoying the flexibility and freedom of running a small business from home.
